Book The Twenty-Ninth Day: Surviving a Grizzly Attack in the Canadian Tundra Review :

I found this book to be a tedious trek across the tundra. It’s billed about a grizzly attack but the bear’s role is that of minor plot gimmick. I wanted to know more about circumstances of attack and medical treatment and recovery which was briefly mentioned in the epilogue. I did not care about endless yammering about paddling, putting up and taking down tents and what they ate. I never did learn why RCMP interviewed him and he barely mentioned wildlife officers . I slogged through the book but finally found myself rooting for the bear!
I eagerly bought this book, thinking this would be more about the bear than this kid going on and on and on and on and on about paddling techniques, meals while camping, and the endless detailed passages about his friend cleaning his wound. Why the hell didn't they just call for an airlift as soon as they could? Why in the world would you risk dying from an infection or worse, rabies, just to finish a canoe trip. Really? Talk about self-absorbed. This whole book was a study in self-absorption. I had to force myself to finish it as I thought it might get better. Nope. Don't waste your money. If you want information about bears, buy bear biologist Stephen Herrero's "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance". You won't find a better read if you are looking to learn about bears.
