Ebook About
A five-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and bestselling novelist shows how to tell a great story — and why doing so matters. Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.

Book Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling Review :

If you want to stand up on stage and perform a five or six minute story for a formal audience, then this is the perfect book for you. If you want to learn about storytelling in general, though, the usefulness of this book is quite limited.Dicks has a very specific concept of storytelling that works for the Moth stage, but I don't believe will work for people in the law, in politics or in business, among other important contexts. Why? He argues that a story must be about you, not anyone else. But if your audience is there to learn a subject, get oriented to a company's goals, persuade people to vote or decide a verdict, your story normally shouldn't be about you.In Dicks' approach, heart matters more than head, and only some emotions are acceptable. Anger and indignation, for example, are nowhere to be found. Nor are intellectual epiphanies. The purpose of storytelling in his view is always emotional connection, not self-expression, not wonder and nor persuasion. If you resonate with that, great. But that's not the be-all and end-all of storytelling.I did find some useful techniques and insights in Chapters 7 through 14. And I did get an answer to the question that motivated me to buy the book: Was this someone whose workshops I wanted to attend? The answer was no.
I didn't buy this book because I want to stand on a stage and tell stories about my life. I got it to help me create a graphic novel memoir and I wanted some technique on how to take memories from my childhood and to craft them into something that has structure and meaning. I certainly got that, along with a very entertaining book that is full of great tips, fabulous stories, and homework that I've been doing regularly. I read this book with a highlighter in one hand, and a notebook in the other. And all the while I flipped through the pages absorbing his lessons, ideas came to me. I wrote them all down. I located the themes in my own stories. I worked out key points. And I even cut bits. All while reading Storyworthy. It has jumpstarted my own project. Thanks for that, Matt.Matt says at the end of the book that he aims to be entertaining, and he certainly is that. It's a fun read that I would happily recommend to anyone, because we all tell stories, and it's nice to have a little help along the way.
